Brookgreen Gardens and the Low Country Zoo- Murrells Inlet, SC

If you enjoy nature, sculptures, and animals you'll certainly enjoy Brookgreen Gardens. If you visit you'll have the opportunity to see over 2,000 figurative sculptures by 430 artists. The property is rather large at 9,100 acres, so hopefully you came prepared with good walking shoes and a water bottle. If you didn't, you're still in luck, they offer a shuttle that runs often! If you visit during the Summer- they have a cool program called Summer Light: Art by Night. Hopefully one day we can come back and see this, also note that it's only on Wednesdays or Saturdays.

Since we visited The Gardens in July- it was quite hot!!! We were glad we brought a portable fan for our 2 boys. During our walk towards the Zoo, as we passed by Wall Low Country Center, we found a surprise just behind it, a great kids area with a sensory trail! It was completely unmarked on their map, so if you want to find a neat area that has a couple of centers for kids, it's a great place to take a break and cool down! Photo of our niece with the Fairy Garden!

This year we didn't get the opportunity to do Brookgreens creek excursion but we did it many years ago and it was fabulous!!! We saw a ton of wildlife, alligators, birds, turtles and so much more! You'll also get to see prehistoric Rice Fields. On the tour the guide talked about the history of the Low Country. It was very educational!

This year we visited the Zoo and the Butterfly house, we spent the majority of our day here. They have, horses, goats, deer, eagles, alligators, otters, foxes, bulls and so much more! They also had a couple different animal fur's and skulls that the kids could feel and guess what animal it was, DC enjoyed that. Not too far away their is a really cool looking playground for the kids, it has a pirate ship that our 3 year old son wanted to play on so badly but we ran out of time. At least we will be back next year!!! :)

What we learned at Brookgreen, is that if you're only planning on doing Zoo activities, park at the Zoo otherwise you're going to have a long walk back to the car or have to wait for the shuttle. We ended up sending my Father in law and Husband back for the vehicles luckily, they just barely caught the shuttle and in the meantime my sister in law and I stayed back with the kids.

Overall it was a great family friendly activity that everyone seemed to enjoy! :) Our next blog we will be sharing about more beach activities!
